Are you an attorney, law student or other volunteer looking to make a difference in people’s lives while also gaining experience with clean slate remedies? Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) is currently looking for volunteers who are able to volunteer 1 – 2 days per week and one Saturday a month to support clean slate work in Glendale. This is an exciting opportunity for volunteers interested in social justice to assist those who have been negatively impacted by the criminal system. Volunteers will assist clients with clearing their criminal records and restoring their civil rights, including but not limited to expungements, Prop 47 & 64 petitions, employment rights counseling, and reduction of felonies to misdemeanors.
Volunteers will be given a monthly case load of clients and, under the close supervision and mentorship of a supervising attorney, work up their case from start to finish. This will allow each volunteer to gain practical experience managing a caseload, reviewing criminal case documents, assessing eligibility for clean slate remedies, interviewing clients, preparing declarations and providing guidance to clients on filing their petitions in pro per. Volunteers in the past have assisted with impact litigation, community outreach, and eviction defense in addition to their reentry case loads.
Applicants must be able to commit at the very least to attending the monthly clinic on the 4th Saturday of each month and working out of our Glendale office one day a week. Applicants must also be proactive, self motivated, dependable, detail oriented, punctual, work well with others, practice cultural humility, and committed to working with communities that have been negatively impacted by the criminal justice system.
